In preparation for Halloween 2011

Halloween is coming fast. Girls are getting slutty dresses and boys are impersonating vampires, Frankensteins and star wars heroes. But not only this. Costume ideas are getting more creative with every year. Last year I saw a guy dressed as his own Facebook page, another girl was a Rubik's cube, and someone else was dressed as a cupcake.

We wanted to take it easy this year and just relax. One Halloween preparation seemed like a lot of fun, though, so we decided to head to a Pumpkin Patch and find just the perfect pumpkin. Pumpkin carving known as making a Jack o'Lantern is a well known custom in the USofA, but not too many people these days actually carve their own pumpkins.

Also not many people know where the custom comes form and what it resembles.

Here is what I found in the vast Internet resources.

Why Carve Pumpkins aka Jack o'Lantern

The story of the Jack o'Lantern comes from Irish folklore. Jack was a crafty farmer who tricked the Devil into climbing a tall tree. When the Devil reached the highest branch, Jack carved a large cross in the trunk, making it impossible for the Devil to climb down.

In exchange for help getting out of the tree, the Devil promised never to tempt Jack with evil again. When Jack died, he was turned away from Heaven for his sins and turned away from Hell because of his trickery. Condemned to wander the earth without rest, Jack carved out one of his turnips, took an ember, and used it for a lantern to light his way. He became known as "Jack of the Lantern."
